The dangers on an paradise island - coconuts!
Life here on the island of Koh - Phagnan is quite stress-free, so it is difficult to find things to complain or worry about. Laying on the beach all day could give you a severe case of sunburn I suppose, swimming here is not dangerous at all as it is not deep enough to drown in.
You could walk a kilometre to the coral wall and find deep water on the other side, but its just so far away! A fave complaint is the bloody sand! It gets everywhere, in your hair, in your clothes, all over the floor and worst of all, on your sheets. That can be a little annoying.
The beer can get warm a bit too quick too, but we have cooler sleeves to stop that, when you can be bothered walking the 20 feet to the bungalow to get it of course. So I have developed a wholly irrational (or so I thought) fear of being killed by a coconut falling out of a tree and landing on my head!
I assure you these coconuts are quite as large as your head, very heavy, and if you saw how tall these trees are you would understand my disquiet! So, whenever I take out my recliner, which Michele kindly bought me for my birthday, I always look up first to see if there are any possible fruit dangers in the vicinity, and move away if there is.
Michele thought me quite mad for doing this, that is until last night; We had a couple of friends over for a few beers in the bar on the beach (I know, its such a hard life!) and Michele’s two lovely dog-loving ladies came and joined us. We were talking about Michele needing a rabies injection to work with them and talking about the various dangers of the job, when out of the blue, Theresa (Hmmm Yummy!) said “At least its not as bad as getting a coconut dropped on your head”.
She went on and told us about someone she knew who became a vegetable after that exact thing happened! Apparently it is the second highest cause of death on the island after motorbike accidents. So, there you have it! It is not an irrational fear, and I will now feel quite justified in looking up anytime I decide to rest or sit anywhere. See, life isn’t all roses and sunshine on a paradise island after all!
