Tokyo is still Safe for Beer Drinkers- Top places local like

Fairly recently there has been lots of talk in the Japanese papers concerning "fly-jin", a play on words for the Japanese phrase for foreigners "gaijin." While it's true the tsunami and on-going disaster at the Fukushima nuclear plant have caused many foreigners to leave the nation, it is also probably true that a large number stayed just as the Japanese.

My wife is in Tokyo (well she is Japanese), the majority of my foreign good friends are still in Tokyo, and much of the mass anxiety I saw at the start of the tragedy was the product of ordinary concern during a period when little important information was readily available. So now that things have calmed down somewhat, the most sensible thing we can do for Japan is continue to visit, aid the recovery, and let everyone know it is even now a safe place to take a trip to.

There are plenty of things to do in Tokyo, but as summertime approaches, and the air con is sure to be in tight supply due to energy cuts, it is time to respond like a local and appreciate a nice frosty beer, or two, or three, or….well you understand. I myself will be doing this as I travel to Japan in June. So this is not idle information, but a master strategy from a long time resident of Japan.

I was advised recently that in addition to bottled water, batteries, and flashlights, the current greatest shortage in Tokyo is beer. Yes, that's right, beer. With the leading producers having their plants in the north their production capacity has been impacted. But fear not, I always have a strategy when in involves beer. If you're in Tokyo the following are the perfect locations to indulge in a draft while helping to boost the economy.

Our first stop is in April when the sakura (cherry blossoms) are in full bloom. This is the simplest of all suggestions, if your timing is right, and fits right in with the Japanese custom of hanami (hanging out underneath the cherry blossoms). Grab a couple of beers from a convenience store (yup, they all sell beer) or out of a vending machine (yes, these exist too) and head to your nearest park to imbibe under the sakura. For especially lively times I recommend highly Ueno Park, Shinjuku Gyoen or Sumida Park.

If you're concerned about the big beer manufactures running out of supplies, don't worry too much, there is a thriving micro beer scene in Japan. In June the Great Japan Beer Festival begins at Ebisu Garden Hall. This is your opportunity to check out about 120 Japanese micro brews. If you do not mind crowded places with a ton of beer lovers (who could dislike that) this is the event for you. There are 3 sessions scheduled on June 4 (11.30am-3pm and 4-7.30pm) and June 5 (12-4pm) with passes costing 500 yen each (about $5).

If you are hoping for something just a little less crowded where you can sit, it is time to visit one of the hundreds of beer gardens which open all around the city in the summer. Let's face the facts, Tokyo can get very warm in the summer so I highly recommend going to the riverfront to quench your thirst. TY Harbor Brewery is directly on the junction of Tennoz and Shibaura waterways and makes good beers right on location. No need to worry about lack of beer here. Best of all is the knowledge that 10% of all sales go to aid kids in the tsunami afflicted zones. Sounds and tastes excellent to me!
