Kegerator Parts for Your Conversion

If you've done the research, you know that if you already have a refrigerator, converting it to a kegerator can be much less expensive than purchasing a ready-made kegerator from a manufacturer.
And, if you're going to do a conversion, you're going to need to get the right kegerator parts. Where to start? There are a lot of parts out there. How do you decide what route to go?

First, you should decide if you are going to go with a converter kit or if you're going to choose custom kegerator parts to assemble yourself. There is a good selection of converter kits on the market, and a price range that is equally variable. Shop around, and make sure you're getting what you need. For example, if your fridge will only hold one keg, no need to buy a two keg converter. If you are going for a more customized kegerator or keezer, then, you probably already know what parts you're looking for. If not, take a look at some conversion kits and see what parts they include. It's not too hard to figure out what you'll need from there.

Generally, conversion kits come in two types, two sizes each. There is a door-mount unit that will hold either one or two kegs, or a tower unit that will also hold one or two kegs. By the way, as if you didn't already know this, kegs come in different sizes – mini-kegs, pony kegs, quarter barrel and half barrel. Even these vary in size from brand to brand, but the general difference is domestic versus imported.

Before you make any purchases, you should do a little bit of research. You need to know the measurements of the interior of the refrigerator you want to convert. It is important to measure from the top of the compressor shelf to the top of the unit. The space below the compressor shelf is wasted space and it won't do you any good to count on it. With the dimensions of your fridge, you can determine the configuration of the kegs it can hold. Don't forget, it also needs to house the Co2 canister, so make sure you account for that in your measurements. If you haven't purchased your refrigerator yet, you can do this process backwards. Determine how many and what types of kegs you will use to determine which type of refrigerator will work the best for your ideal configuration.

Kegerator parts that should be included in your conversion kit or custom project include a Co2 regulator, Co2 line assembly, Sanky couplers, taps, beer line assembly, and either towers (top-mount version) or shanks (door-mount version). Make sure your kit comes with detailed instructions for easier assembly.

Other parts that may be included or offered separately include Co2 tanks (these will be empty as they cannot be shipped full), drip trays, faucet covers, faucet locks, custom tap handles, wheels for easy mobility, remote control devices, cleaning kits, temperature gauges and thermostats, and volume monitors. You can even find repair kits that come with tools and replacement kegerator parts.

As mentioned above, conversion kits come in a variety of price points. They are available for as little as $30 and as much as $400, not including the refrigerator. Because you can do a conversion relatively cheaply, it is a viable option to an out of the box kegerator.
