Save money by booking at one of the hostels in Munich and have more fun!
Known as the 'City with a Heart', Munich offers a perfect mix of a cosmopolitan and a village feel. This city, at the foot of German Alps, is also a marvellous point from which to explore Central Europe. For backpackers with a limited budget and time, HostelsClub.com picked up the best places of this vibrant, beer-loving city which you have to visit especially in the winter. Why in winter? Firstly you can book hostels in Munich cheaper until April (low season), there are less tourists and you can spend more time on visiting really interesting places!
Ice Skating in Munich
A real highlight in Munich in the winter time are ice skating areas in the city. Munich Eiszauber invites you to have fun at City Hall, in the largest mobile ice arena in Bavaria. For more fresh air come to Gründwalder Freizeitpark and have fun on the 1,400 square meter ice skating rink in the park. If you prefer to stay in a warm hall, come to Olympia Eissporthalle: is is good place for professionals and beginners. Olympia Eissporthalle is also an ideal space for parties on the ice. Three times a week the beginner learns the rock and pop on the ice and everybody is welcome! Don't worry if you don't have equipment, you can rent them.
Ice skating in Munich is really one of the hot spots of winter - and thanks to the Schmankerlhütt'n (small stands with food and drinks) and Glühwein (hot wine), it also promotes physical and mental well-being.
Culture and Art in Munich
Munich has a lot to offer for everybody who loves art. HostelsClub.com suggests to visit the Hypo Kunsthalle in the Fünf Höfe complex as it is the place to see modern art and intellectuals of the city. From 28 January 2011 you can enjoy 150 paintings and sculptures of the exhibit, Orientalism in Europe: from Delacroix to Kandinsky which presents the diverse interpretations of the Islamic Orient, North Africa and the Middle East by almost 100 western European artists. The gallery in the Fünf Höfe complex hosts temporary theme exhibitions. You can enjoy the Haus der Kunst "Tronies" from Marlene Dumas which are interesting for paintings of the emotional movement of faces until February 2011.
Other interesting exhibitions you can visit are at The Alte Pinakothek, one of the oldest and most important galleries in the world with 800 masterpieces by European artists and in The Neue Pinakothek with works of European art and sculpture from the late 18th to the beginning of the 20th century. If you love modern art, you have to visit Pinakothek der Moderne, the biggest museum for modern art in Germany. You will see here mostly new art, sculpture, photography, video, examples of design and hand made crafts and architectural illustrations which represent the modern view of life and art. It is a unique art-historical and historical-cultural ensemble.
What to Visit in Munich in Winter
Munich is famous for baroque and Rococo palaces, but mostly of them have a winter break, so you cannot visit them until March. Don't worry, just walk through the city and enjoy the architecture and lights. Visit the Victuals Market which is located a few steps from the Marienplatz and enjoy th atmosphere of the open air market. Here you can have a cheap and nice lunch and try typical dishes such as the traditional Bavarian Schweinshax'n and Speck, delicious cheeses and bread. It is not a touristic place, but the "Munchener" has a market to buy there fruits, meat or rare and special herbs and spices that can't be found anywhere else in the region.
Walk to the English Garden, Munich´s famous 900-acre park, and enjoy the true nature and calmness: in winter you can enjoy it even more: no loud children, no drunk tourists nor students groups. The park seems to sleep: just ponds and swans and empty tables in the Beer Garden. The English Garden is best known for its four beer gardens Chinesischer Turm, Seehaus, Hirschau and Aumeister, but you can have a beer and enjoy the Bavarian food in the Beerkeller inside.
Hot Spot in Munich: Bavaria Filmstadt
Take time to visit Germany's Film City, where around 150 hours of cinema and TV films are produced every year. Alfred Hitchcock made his first film, The Pleasure Garden, there in 1925. The studios have been used by numerous famous directors, such as Stanley Kubrick (Paths of Glory, 1957), Bob Fosse (Cabaret, 1972) or Ingmar Bergman (The Serpent's Egg, 1977).
This was the birthplace of films such as 'Das Boot' ('The U-Boat', 1981), The Never-ending Story (1984) and Tom Tykwer's Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) and many German TV series like a Derrick or The Old Fox. During the guides tour, you will learn lots of facts and have even more fun. In some of the film sets, you will even be able to re-enact short film sequences. And with bad weather you can enjoy a 4 - D Movie with a fast-paced tour in Michael Bully Herbig's snowboard movie. Moving seats, fog, wind and lots of special effects make the movie a multimedia racket. Buckle up and get ready for a ride you won't forget!
Beer and food in Munich
Munich has over 70 beer gardens, beer halls and pubs where you can enjoy traditional Bavarian beer and food. The most famous beer restaurant is Hofbräuhau. This beer hall has existed since 1644 and lives up to its reputation: beer, food, tourists, oom-pah music, drunken revelry and Lederhosen. Check out the wall of beer stalls, personalized and locked away for their owners. Tables labeled with 'Stammtisch' are reserved for regulars (this is true for all Bavarian restaurants).
For good prices and quality you should go to Augustiner Bräu (Arnulfstr. 52) or Flaucher (Isarauen 8 ). All of them have restaurants where you can enjoy very strong German beer and delicious Bavarian food!
Where to Stay in Munich
Munich's hostels are nice and cheap, and a lot of them are very close to the Munich train station such as Wombat's City Hostel, 4 You Munich, A&O München Hauptbahnhof or Euro Youth Hotel. In this area you will also find a lot of bars and clubs.
The cheapest hostel in Munich is Easy Palace City Hostel, (about 11€ per night) known by backpackers as a really nice bakpacker's hostel with a big chill out lounge and a nice bar where you can participate in free Bavarian beer tasting or a karaoke evening! In the Hostel Central Munich or House International Munich you will spend about 20€ per night and have good services and be in a great position in the city!
Enjoy Munich in winter with HostelsClub.com!
